A group of Star Wars enthusiasts transformed a German observatory into a massive R2-D2, and the end result is an intergalactic masterpiece.
Hubert Zitt, a physics professor and Star Wars fan, worked with painter Klaus Ruffing and some students to repaint the Zweibrück Observatory of the Natural Science Association, which is located in Zweibrücken, Germany, to resemble the famous astromech droid, Designboom reported. The team completed the paint redesign in September 2018, and many Star Wars junkies have visited the quirky structure.
The R2-D2-inspired observatory recently caught the attention of Star Wars actor Mark Hamill, who recently posted about the cool building on Twitter. “R2-D2 observatory transformed Germans into giant nerds,” Hamill quoted in the Twitter post, which has received more than 8,000 likes.

Before, the dome-topped observatory was a dull white shade, however, Zitt, who holds science fiction lectures at the University of Kaiserslautern, recruited a small team of people to redesign the building into the Star Wars character. Curbed noted that the team painted R2-D2’s markings with a cobalt blue color, the building’s roof contains the robot’s eye, and the doors feature his square-shaped buttons.
This isn’t the first R2-D2 structure either: In 2010, Goodsell Observatory in Northfield, Michigan, was temporarily transformed into the astromech droid with a shiny dome decoration and spray-painted fabrics.
If you would like to visit the R2-D2-inspired observatory, you’ll have to go to a galaxy far far away (also known as Germany), but the trip could be worth it if you want to cross this Star Wars landmark off your bucket list.
